The aim of this project is to determine the status and distribution of the Eurasian badger (Meles meles) in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg.
Distribution
I investigated the status of the badger using two questionnaire surveys of hunters, one carried out by Ady Krier, Head of the Service de la Chasse et de la Pêche of the Administration des Eaux et Forêts, Luxembourg, in 1989, and the second by myself in 1998. In both cases we got about 70% replies. Preliminary results suggest that the badger population has increased in Luxembourg since 1989, significantly more hunters indicating its presence in 1998. However, a detailed field survey is under way to verify indications of the hunters and to establish a more complete picture of the species' distribution.
